Pray for Ecuador

Dear friends, we are shaken, but not stirred.

Just before 7:00pm local time (8:00pm EDT) on Saturday, April 16th, Ecuador was rocked by an earthquake. My apartment in Quito – 115 miles east of the epicenter – shook for about 30 seconds. I moved into the bathroom of my second floor apartment as I heard some of my neighbors flee the building. I thought the quake had hit near Quito, but quickly learned otherwise.

The US Geological Survey initially reported the earthquake north of Pedernales, Ecuador as a 7.4 magnitude quake. This number was later corrected to a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Pedernales is a beach town which I had the chance to visit in February 2015. Also, Inca Link’s two current interns had plans to visit Pedernales next weekend with their host families. Those plans have likely changed.

Inca Link’s locations on the coast are in Manta and Portoviejo (both are about 105 miles south of the epicenter). Thankfully, everyone connected with Inca Link appears to be alright. Our missionary couple in Manta, the Easons, are actually in the US right now showing off their new baby girl! I was able to contact a few friends of the ministry in Manta though. The destruction in the city is moderate. A wall collapsed at the church that hosts our ministry, Bonsai. One missionary couple there reported, “Our apartment building has holes in the interior and exterior walls the size of our van. I have no idea how the building is still standing.” They spent the night using that van to transport kids from a children’s home further inland due to a tsunami warning.

Nationally, 246 deaths have been reported, and I’m sure that number will rise. Many, many buildings and homes are destroyed along the coast line. Many cities are partially, if not completely, without power.

Please pray for Ecuador, especially the coast, as we step forward into this coming week. Pray for the families of the dead and injured. Pray for healing: physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Pray that God’s love would shine through. Pray, pray, pray.

We will need teams and interns this summer to help serve those in need.

burning for Him,

Patrick Watts
